Detour Texas began during my time in graduate school at NYU, sparked by the guidance and creative push of my photojournalism professors. What started as a class assignment quickly grew into a passion project—one that led me down a not-so-quick ~three year journey into several regions of my home state, and into the lives, landscapes, and layered identities that make it what it is.
Guided by the challenge to look beyond the obvious and stay curious (something I tell my nephew every time I can), I set out to explore not only the iconic staples that have boasted Texas’ big reputation, but also the overlooked spaces and everyday moments that define the spirit of the state.
This book is more than just a travelogue, though. It is a personal, visual and written record of my home as seen through the lens of discovery, memory, and human connection.
It is a love letter to the unexpected paths that reveal the most.
